Seville has become one of the favourite destinations for thousands of people, who travel to the capital of Andalusia to see unique places in the world on the banks of the mighty Guadalquivir River. If you want to enjoy the light and colour of Seville, don’t miss this article, where we tell you about its main tourist attractions.
A World Heritage Site
One of the great attractions of Seville is the ensemble formed by the Cathedral, the Real Alcázar and the Archive of the Indies, declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The history, art and heritage of these three buildings are a point of reference and are admired all over the world.
In the case of the Cathedral, we are talking about the third largest temple in the whole of Christianity, only surpassed by St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Of course, its main altarpiece is the largest in the world and an example of sacred art. Of course, when talking about Seville Cathedral, we cannot leave out the greatest symbol of the city, the Giralda tower. This construction is of Islamic origin (12th century) and was completed with the bell tower in the 16th century.
The Real Alcázar is also of Islamic origin and has grown over the centuries, forming an exceptional ensemble where different artistic styles are combined in its palaces and a spectacular garden where various events and shows are held throughout the year.
The third World Heritage building in Seville is the Archivo de Indias, a place of interest for housing all kinds of documents related to the first centuries of Spain’s contact with America and the Philippines.
«Las Setas», one of Seville’s major tourist attractions
The Metropol Parasol has become one of the main tourist attractions in Seville over the last decade. Its privileged position, right in the heart of the city, as well as the views it offers, have made it a must-see if you are travelling to the Andalusian city. Don’t miss the sunset from the viewpoint!
As well as going up to the heights, ‘Las Setas’ allows you to go down to its basement to visit archaeological sites from the Roman and Almohad periods.
Plaza de España, a symbol of regionalist architecture in Andalusia
About to turn 100 years old, the Plaza de España is an imposing regionalist-style complex designed by the architect Aníbal González. After visiting the colossal Plaza de España, you can stroll through the gardens of the Parque de María Luisa, where you’ll find other buildings designed by Aníbal Gonzáles for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition.
In some of the city’s main streets you can find more buildings by Aníbal González and other architects who were a benchmark of Andalusian regionalism.
Barrio de Santa Cruz and Triana, pure essence of Seville
And to round off your visit to Seville’s main tourist attractions, there’s nothing like a stroll through the charming neighbourhoods of Santa Cruz and Triana. We can assure you that you will fall in love with their streets and alleys, as well as offering a full range of bars and restaurants where you can try the traditional ‘tapas’.
